Delivering science and technology to protect our nation and promote world stability
Engineered Materials
Materials design, fabrication, assembly and characterization for national security needs.

We perform polymer science and engineering, including ultra-precision target design, fabrication, assembly, characterization, and field support.
Materials design, fabrication, assembly and characterization for national security needs
Our mission is to provide
- Fundamental materials science to enable an understanding of materials aging and lifetime prediction;
- Synthesis and coating of unique materials in the national security interest ranging from polymers and specialized porous materials to uranium ceramic materials
- Unique engineering, micro-machining and assembly capabilities to enable an understanding of High Energy Density (HED) physics
- Characterization of a wide range of materials using a broad suite of techniques including thermal and mechanical testing, spectroscopic property analysis, reaction kinetics and x-ray tomographic and microscopic characterization
- Delivery of specialized solutions to materials challenges in the areas of advanced manufacturing, weapons materials, crystal growth, novel detector technologies and optical refrigeration
Modernizing the nation's stockpile
Using the Plutonium Surface Science Lab, MST researchers support the Lab’s mission by studying the surface structure and science of small plutonium samples.
