Office of Scientific and Technical Information (OSTI)

OSTI is the organization within the U.S. Dept. of Energy responsible for ensuring that the results of DOE-funded R&D and other science and technology activities are identified, disseminated, and preserved.   OSTI produces a variety of databases and search tools.

OSTI Databases

OSTI.GOV (formerly SciTech Connect) – publicly-available DOE-sponsored R&D results including report literature, conference papers, journal articles, books, dissertations, patents, multimedia and datasets.  It covers science, technology and engineering from the 1940s to today. There are over 2.9 million citations, of which approximately one third have links to full text. Read more About OSTI.GOV

NOTE: OSTI.GOV  records are also searchable via Primo, the Research Library’s discovery system.  Primo covers technical literature fromOSTI.GOV, DTIC, NASA’s NTRS, and the Research Library collection.

Science Research Connection (SRC) – includes unclassified/unlimited literature (as in OSTI.GOV), plus controlled unclassified information (CUI). For CUI material, registration is required.  The metadata but not the full text is searchable.  Full-text links are not provided for CUI, rather a limited report may be requested, and OSTI notifies the OSTI Point of Contact of the respective laboratory, who follows internal procedures for the specific category of material.

DOE PAGES – will offer distributed full-text access to all DOE-affiliated accepted manuscripts or articles after an administrative interval of 12 months.

DOE Data Explorer – DOE scientific research data and non-text information
ScienceCinema – Multimedia videos highlighting DOE's scientific research
Science.gov – U.S. science information from 13 federal agencies, in websites and databases
National Library of Energy (NLE) [Beta] – gateway to websites and databases across the DOE complex
ETDEWEB World Energy Base – 5 million+ references on energy and basic sciences.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Office of Scientific and Technical Information (OSTI) is to advance science and sustain technological creativity by making research and development (R&D) findings available and useful to U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) researchers and the public.

Scientific and Technical Information Management (DOE Order 241.1B)

This directive ensures that STI is appropriately managed as part of the DOE mission to enable the advancement of scientific knowledge and technological innovation.  It supports the DOE Scientific and Technical Information Program, or STIP, which collects information from across the DOE complex, including the Los Alamos National Laboratory.
