"The generosity of this incredibly important part of our community has had a deep impact on those who are struggling throughout Northern New Mexico"- Jill Dixon, director of development at the Food Depot

Each year, employees and friends of Los Alamos National Laboratory donate nonperishable food items to be distributed to families around Northern New Mexico in time for the holidays.

The items needed to fill a donation box include: instant mashed potatoes, boxed stuffing, canned evaporated milk, canned vegetables, canned sweet potatoes or cranberries, a four-pound bag of sugar, a five-pound bag of flour or biscuit mix, a quart of vegetable oil, boxed cake or cookie mix, and a jar of coffee, tea, or fruit-drink mix.

Donations are dropped off at the Community Partnerships Office in downtown Los Alamos (1619 Central Ave) or at various locations around the Laboratory, and employees also have the opportunity to purchase gift cards if they are unable to shop for food.

Laboratory employees are also encouraged to participate in the annual Take Your Turkey To Work Day, where frozen turkeys are collected at vehicle checkpoints on the way into the Laboratory.

The Laboratory's partner the Food Depot bring the donated food items to its warehouse in Santa Fe where Lab volunteers will help prepare holiday food boxes for families.

"The Food Depot is grateful for the longstanding relationship with the Community Partnerships Office and Los Alamos National Laboratory,” says Jill Dixon, director of development at the Food Depot. “The generosity of this incredibly important part of our community has had a deep impact on those who are struggling throughout Northern New Mexico. Giving the gift of food leaves a lasting impression on all involved."

The Food Depot distribute the boxes in the second week of December to more than 12 Northern New Mexico organizations that have identified families in need to receive the food.

Food drive efforts for 2017

The 2017 Laboratory holiday food drive was a great success, with enough contributions from Lab employees to distribute 500 turkeys and 500 boxes of food to families in need across Northern New Mexico.

“Five hundred families will have a better time over the holidays because of the generosity of the people at the Lab and our partners,” says Selena Valencia, who coordinated the drive. “Groups and individuals across the Laboratory really come together to make this great effort happen.”

In addition to the 12,000 pounds of food and the turkeys collected during the drive and on Take Your Turkey to Work Day at the Lab held on November 20, employees donated gift cards used to make up any gaps in what was needed. Los Alamos National Security, LLC; Cray Computing; and Stewart Title also supported the drive.

The Food Depot collected and sorted the food before distributing it to the thirteen agencies who made the final deliveries to the families. The partner agencies are San Martin de Porres Soup Kitchen (Española), Taos Feeds Taos, Wings for Hope (Santa Fe), St Vincent de Paul (Abiquiu, San Juan, Chimayo, Española and Pojoaque), LA Cares (Los Alamos), North Central Food Pantry (Questa), Samaritan House (Las Vegas), St. Elizabeth’s Shelter (Santa Fe), Knights of Columbus (Española) and The Food Depot (Santa Fe).
