Shower and locker room repair at the Wellness Center

The KSL crafts staff are doing a major repair of both the men's and women's locker rooms at the Wellness Center beginning today. The repairs include patch and painting walls, replacement of tile and caulking, repair and/or replacement of ventilation systems, and replacement of the non skid Rhino© surface in showers. The project is scheduled to be completed by September 19.

During this time some Wellness Center services will be disrupted so that work may be performed safely. The Wellness Center will be closed to all users from 5:30 a.m. Friday (September 12) until 5:30 a.m. Monday, September 15. For the week of September 15 through September 19, the showers will not be available for use so that the Rhino© surface can cure adequately.

T-shirts on sale Wednesday at Otowi Building cafeteria lobby

Laboratory employees can purchase a long-sleeve T-shirt and raise money for United Way during the lunch hour Wednesday (September 10). Between 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. in the Otowi Building cafeteria lobby, Dan Pava of the Risk Reduction Office (ENV-RRO) is selling T-shirts for $20, with the proceeds going to the Lab's employee-giving campaign. The T-shirt has the Lab's logo on the front and the slogan "...And the Geeks Shall Inherit the Earth..." on the back.

The 2009 Laboratory United Way employee-giving campaign continues though October 3.

Volunteer opportunities

The following is a list of volunteer opportunities from the Community Programs Office (CPO) to consider:

• Aspen Elementary School needs volunteers to read or listen to children read from 8 to 8:20 a.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. If interested, contact Karen at 412-0597 or by e-mail at k.fortson@laschools.net .
• The Santa Fe Renaissance Fair is a family-oriented event on September 20 and 21 at El Rancho de las Golondrinas Living History Museum. Volunteers are needed before the fair and at the fair to help build games, setup decorations and attractions, and a variety of tasks, ranging from manning games, stage managing, "street characters," setting up, taking-down, and everything in between. Extension of proposal deadline for Institute for Advanced Studies

The Institute for Advanced Studies has extended its August 29 proposal deadline to September 12. The Institute supports conferences, workshops, summer schools, proposal preparation, and other activities that that promote research and educational collaborations with the three New Mexico Consortium Universities (New Mexico State University, New Mexico Tech, and the University of New Mexico).

• Carb Fundamentals -- This class features the role of carbs for health and energy, whole grains, sugar facts, the mystery of the missing carbs ("net carbs"), and glycemic index. Taught by registered dietitian Marta Gentry Munger. Noon to 1 p.m., September 9

Manufacturing Science and Engineering Conference call for papers

The International Manufacturing Science and Engineering Conference will be held at Northwestern University on October 7-10. The conference promotes international collaboration in advancing manufacturing science and technologies.

Wellness Center follows Laboratory operating schedule

The Wellness Center facility is on Laboratory property. If the Laboratory delays opening, has an early release, or closes due to inclement weather or other unforeseen emergency, the Wellness Center follows the Laboratory operating schedule as announced to the rest of the workforce.

Employees and other Wellness Center customers should not come to the Wellness Center when Laboratory management has determined that conditions are such that only essential workers should be at work.

Recreational equipment available for check out from Wellness Center

Want to play bocce ball, volleyball, or horseshoes? The Wellness Center has these and other recreational equipment available to check out. There is no fee to check out the equipment but it can be used only for Laboratory sponsored events, such as office picnics or outings. The equipment can be checked out for a maximum of three days.
