Los Alamos student receives top platinum award

Fifty-two New Mexico students are receiving scholarships thanks to the generosity of Laboratory employees who donated to the Los Alamos Employees’ Scholarship Fund.

Los Alamos High School senior Daniel Trugman is this year’s recipient of the platinum scholarship, which provides $7,500 a year for four years in financial assistance.

“[Working at Los Alamos], I learned how crucial collaboration is to scientific success,” Trugman said. “The road to making a difference in the world of science is not an easy one…my experiences have strengthened my desire to discover.”

Three students are receiving $4,000-per-year, four-year gold scholarships: Siri (Emma) Kirin Khalsa of Santa Fe Waldorf School, Adam Izraelevitz of Los Alamos High School, and Cassandra Olivas of Española Valley High School.

Five students are receiving $2,500-per-year, four-year silver scholarships: Casey Casias of St. Michael’s High School in Santa Fe, Eric Dai of Los Alamos High School, Marc Ellis of Taos High School, Julia Leitner of Santa Fe Preparatory School, and Angelo T. Medina of Española Valley High School.

In addition, three students are receiving $2,500-per-year, four-year Domenici scholarships: Nakul Deshpande of Peñasco High School, who also received a LANS Nonresident Tuition Waiver Scholarship of $20,000 per year for four years, Francheska Gurule of the University of New Mexico, and Nicole Vigil of Pojoaque Valley High School.

The 2009 scholarship drive begins Friday (see accompanying story).

The Los Alamos Employees’ Scholarship Fund encourages Laboratory employees, retirees, and subcontract personnel to donate to a fund that awards college scholarships to Northern New Mexico students. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of grade point average, test scores, diversity, need, academic rigor, leadership, and community involvement.

The Los Alamos Employees’ Scholarship Fund program began in 1998 and is administered by the Los Alamos National Laboratory Foundation. Since its inception, more than 500 scholarships have been awarded, and Laboratory employees have donated nearly $1.75 million to the fund.
